ever wonder how blogs earn money ?

I know many of you out there wonder how do blogs earns money? Well you might have heard of Google adsense? You might also have heard of ads placement ? AND you might have even heard of…. what for it….. popularity. Yes popularity. Thats where all the gold is.

You think i’m bluffing?

Lets start with the basics, you have a blog or are going to get one, what the are you going to write first? Give it some thought and ask yourself this, What is it that makes you talk nonstop? 

That my friend is going to help you earn something. (mileage varies)

Take a good look at dannychoo.com , His interest in Japan and subculture is what makes him talk nonstop so much so that when he was a teen , he knew what he wanted to do and he worked hard from then. I know many of us are probably too late for this , you probably played too much when you were young. But if you have something that can make you talk nonstop or at least annoy your girlfriend, your wife, your mom or everyone around you, you have potential.

You see , blogging is not something you can post once or twice a year and hope it gets popular. Is like taking care of a plant, pet or your own Jr. It needs your constant input. What better constant input you can give if you have something that you really really like and can’t stop talking about it?

If you didn’t like what you are blogging you will hit what is known as “Burnout” and you’ll burn spontaneously and die. I’m kidding, you’ll just get sick of blogging and quit. No more blogging superstar for you then. But i’ll leave posting of actual content for you to figure out.

What i have here are some numbers to think about. This nifty chart serves as a benchmark of what or where you should stand if you want to have a decent amount of money generating passively from your blog.

Take a look at Top 100 finance blog @ Wisebeard.com  (I’m just using them due to the charts, doesn’t mean you have to start a finance blog)

The author was nice and everything to organize things into a beautiful table that shows the alexa rank , page rank , technorati rank and other ranking stuff. Look at the top ten or twenty blogs , see any pattern?

They are all super popular.

For ads to work well , you need X amount of people to see it. Which gives you Y chance of X people clicking on it. A simple math formula for those that are interested would be…

Money earn = Y * X.. However This is not math 101!!

I’ll just give you a simple summary in english, you do need a lot of people reading or looking at your blog for any sort of ads, affiliates and alikes to work. Because you need actual people to see your site and to click on links(be it ads or your blogroll).

This backs the theory : How much do top bloggers earn? Some sites may be familiar to you, well take a look at their visitor stats. Why you think magazines, TV , newspaper and popular blogs can sell advertising? Because there’s an audience; A very very large audience.

Let me just share what little me commands,

• Inbound links … 29
• Alexa rank … Can’t be found, too low to compute.
• current Daily clicks or average views… 60+/-

Do you know how much is that in $ ? … US$0.40 / month. Which by calculation assuming it stays constant i can pay off my hosting and domain bill by… never. I spend US$40 on domains and hosting per year. Do your simple math. 12 x 0.40 = $4.80 per year. What i need actually is to hit a nice steady income of US$3.50/mth to offset my hosting plan, if i can do that i’m a happy man already.

For now, my site can’t even pay for itself.

But don’t burst your blogging dream yet. Because for one, i never intend to earn anything from this blog. I have ads up to hopefully pay off my hosting bill which never came true after 2 years but i’m still hoping it will. There are success stories out there but end of the day it still boils down to hard work, be it designing your blog or doing up posts.

Do i think blogging is easy? Yes it is easy. But blogging for money? No, there’s no such thing as blog and earn $10,000 under 7 days.

If i do make my blog pay back for what it spent, i’ll let you guys know again. But for now , do you have a better idea on how blogs earn money? Let me just sum up everything , Popularity. Tons of it.
